From what it takes to perform at the elite level in sport, to almost calling it quits on her professional career due to a lapse in mental health.
Kate Cross has had a phenomenal career playing at the highest level of women's cricket and we recently sat down with her at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
She recently made her captaincy debut for England and had an absolute stormer of a game. We were keen to interview her while those memories were fresh in her mind.
On a personal note, as far as days out go, Brad and I had probably the best experience to date whilst doing the Fit Dads Podcast. I mean what a day!
Kate's an old school friend of mine and when I reached out to her to see if she would be up for sitting down with us on the pod, not only did she jump at the chance, but she gave us literally the full works.
We had total access to the media suite at Old Trafford cricket ground, which made the visuals on this one extra special. Plus, for the first time since we started the podcast back in February, we felt like actual podcasters!
I'll never forget being sat in that room wondering how two personal trainers from Sheffield ended up here. A truly memorable experience!
During our interview, Kate was unbelievably honest and candid. She opened up about her battle with mental health, something Brad and I weren't expecting but are really grateful she shared with us.
It opened up another line of questioning and direction for the episode. Delving into the pressures of her feeling like she always had to perform at her best. Something that I think our listeners will really resonate with.
We found out prior to the episode that Kate's dad won the FA cup with West Ham back in 1980. Being football fans we had to probe further into this and it turns out shes from a fantastic sporting family.
Throughout Kate's career this has been a huge driving force in wanting to compete at an elite level, but ultimately, it added to her mental stress later in life, feeling like she was letting her family down if she didn't perform at her best.
We also wanted to get Kate's advice on how parents can get more invloced in sport, along with how's best to approach getting your kids started too.
Get ready to be inspired by a true gem of an athlete and person.
And be sure to check out her podcast too with her old cricket pal, Alex Hartley, called the No Balls Podcast - Great name! lol
Our episode with Kate is now available on all platforms.
